So I got it for Christmas today, the holy grail. It is a Bandai Duesenberg SJ sedan.
I have heard about the kit in the past and had seen them go for truly obscene prices on eBay. Well, for Christmas my wife bid on and bought me the kit. I know it was crazy expensive but she said I am worth it. So I open it up this morning. Don't get me wrong. I am very happy to have the model, but as a model of a Duesenberg, it, well, it . Here is the problem.
And here is a close up of the issue. As you can see, the window frames are very strange with an odd slant to them that was never present in a production Duesenberg. I think the car is trying to be a model of the "Bojangles" car, which never had this wierd trunk on the back.
So, forum friends, here is my dilema. This is a rare and valuable kit. Do I build it out of the box, flaws and all, or do I build it with minor modifications as a curbside, recognizing that I will probably always have a few issues with it but knowing that I have preserved the essence of the kit while fixing the glaring errors. A third option would be to make some significant changes to the kit while making sure it remains 95% Bandai. This would involve adding the correct trunk, dashboard, steering wheel, headlights, and (believe it or not) engine, from the Monogram Duesenberg. Clearly, it will never be a show winner (not that I usually have problems with that as I usually get my clock cleaned in contests!). I have already ruled out making it "right" as I would probably be better off just starting off fresh with a brand new Monogram Duesenberg model. I am eager to hear your thoughts.
Wishing you all a very merry Christmas!
Eric
